~ History of Bon Odori in Malaysia ~
What started as a small affair for Japanese expatriates to immerse their children in Japanese culture in
1976 has now grown into a much awaited annual event that averages 36,000 participants annually. This is
the single largest Japanese Cultural Event in Malaysia and it is possibly the largest Bon‐Odori festival in the
world outside Japan. The annual Bon‐Odori celebration in Malaysia is an effort to promote and strengthen
cultural ties between Malaysia and Japan as well as to showcase Japanese culture to Malaysians.

TRANSPORTATION:
Q: Which is the best way to get to the Bon‐Odori event in Kompleks Sukan Shah Alam?
A: You should take the KTM Komuter or leave your car at the Komuter station to take
the Free Shuttle Bus.
Q: Which Komuter station should I get off?
A: You can get off at the KTM Shah Alam Station and our Shuttle Buses will be
waiting to take you all the way to the main gate of the stadium.
Q: Which is the correct Shuttle Bus?
A: Don’t worry! You will be able to recognise the Bon‐Odori Shuttle Buses by a colourful Bon‐Odori banner
hung in front of all shuttle buses heading to the event area!
PARKING:
Q: Where should I park?
A: There are limited car parks at the Panasonic, JVC, Nippon Electric Glass, POS
buildings as well as the empty land behind the stadium. We truly do not advise you
to drive but instead, take the KTM free Shuttle Bus services!
MAIN EVENT:
Q: What is the programme like?
A: At the Bon‐Odori festival, you can expect amazing festivities such as food stalls, games and participants
from all walks of life. Of course, the main attraction is the Bon‐Odori which is the Japanese cultural dance.
All participants are welcome to dance together and there will also be a few guest performances!
APPROPRIATE CLOTHING
Q: What should I wear to the Bon‐Odori festival?
A: Traditionally, participants wear yukata, or light cotton kimonos so do wear them if you have one!
Otherwise, light t‐shirts and pants with sandals or sneakers will be fine!
TIP: Do not wear heels as the event is held on a field and you may trip and fall!
Q: What else?
A: You may want to also apply sunblock and also bring mosquito repellent!
FOOD & DRINKS
Q: Can I get food at the event?
A: Yes! We have a large variety of Japanese and local food, local snacks and also
drinks sold at the venue.
TIP: Remember to drink lots of water at the event to avoid dehydration!
Q: Can I pay by cash or do I have to buy coupons in advance?
A: All vendors at the event accept only cash.
